Fish and chips is a popular meal in the UK, that’s a well known fact, but is it really so popular that they have to make a song about it? Well, yes, apparently. Ok, the creator of this fishy tune, Shahid Nazir is actually from Pakistan, but he is a London resident who has been working as a…you guessed it, fishmonger! You know, someone who sells fish, and at very cheap prices too. We don’t use dollars here in the UK, we use pounds and pence, and the lyrics of the marvellous ‘One Pound Fish’ song explain just how much Shahid charges for his goods. Shahid was given phrases from his boss on a London market stall to shout out to bring in the customers. Before he knew it, he’d made this song up. Customers queued up to buy his fish, filmed his lovely singing and BOOM, he became superstar. Let’s hope he doesn’t forget his ’plaice’ as a once humble salesman if he becomes rich. After all, there’ll be no more market stall work for Shahid, he’s now got bigger fish to fry, and he’s a big fish in a small pond…
So if you’re ever in the UK and you fancy a fish or two, get d’aaan the market and follow Shahid’s advice: ‘Come on ladies, come on ladies, one pound fish!’
